(Elements in Counselling!)
Carl Rogers believed that personal growth and change will happen in counselling if these six conditions are present. He said they are necessary and sufficient, meaning no extra techniques are required.

1. Psychological Contact
There must be a real relationship between the counsellor and the client.
Both people are aware of each other
The client is able to engage emotionally
Without this contact, counselling cannot work
2. Client’s Incongruence
The client is experiencing incongruence, which means inner conflict or distress.
A gap between who they are and who they want to be
Feelings like anxiety, confusion, sadness, or low self-worth
This discomfort motivates the client to seek help
3. Counsellor Congruence (Genuineness)
The counsellor is real, open, and authentic in the relationship.
Not hiding behind a professional mask
Honest and transparent (without oversharing)
This builds trust and safety
4. Unconditional Positive Regard
The counsellor accepts the client without judgment.
The client is valued as a person, regardless of behaviour
No criticism, blame, or conditions
Helps the client feel safe to explore difficult feelings
5. Empathic Understanding
The counsellor deeply understands the client’s feelings and experiences.
Seeing the world from the client’s perspective
Communicating this understanding back to the client
Makes the client feel heard and understood
6. Client’s Perception of Empathy and Acceptance
The client must experience the counsellor’s empathy and acceptance.
It’s not enough for the counsellor to feel it
The client must sense and believe it
This allows growth and self-acceptance
Why These Conditions Matter
When all six are present:
· Clients become more self-accepting
· Anxiety and defensiveness reduce
· Personal growth and positive change occur naturally
